It’s an unfamiliar question for deep-blue Maryland, which hasn’t had a Republican senator in nearly four decades. But the state’s typically sleepy Senate race has heated up this year after Larry Hogan, the popular former two-term Republican governor, decided to run. Now Democrats across the state are wringing their hands trying to figure out which of their candidates has a better shot at defeating Mr. Hogan. Perhaps because of the heightened stakes, the contest has turned increasingly negative as it has tightened, splitting Democrats in Congress and beyond. While congressional leaders have endorsed Mr. Trone, all but one Democrat in the state’s congressional delegation are backing Ms. Alsobrooks.

Because UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was seen wearing a pair. “In a bid to present himself as young and hip… Sunak took an eternally cool sneaker, and ruined it for everyone,” added British GQ. It’s a far cry from the public reaction another political leader received after being spotted in a pair of sneakers. Mohd Rasfan/AFP/Getty ImagesSo why aren’t Sunak’s Sambas striking the same chord? Even the most ardent sneakerheads know there is a time and a place for a gum sole, and the British public have decided on-camera at 10 Downing Street is neither.

The signs and symbols that designate our beliefs and affiliations are slippery. While the Christian cross, the Islamic star and crescent, the Jewish Star of David, and their copyrighted, vigorously litigated corporate equivalents — swooshes, apples and targets — may prove resilient, a dizzying mix of familiar and newly minted graphic devices now compete for our dwindling attention. These days there is no movement without messaging. Even anarchy has a brand identity, its scratchy circled A logo has migrated from your corner lamppost to a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor Anarchy-edition All-Stars. From the pink hats of the Women’s March to the red hats of the Capitol raid, rainbows to thin blue lines, salute emojis to watermelon emojis, we are navigating a thicket of improvised graphic devices.

The picture, “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (30),” is a 2015 work by the Filipino-American artist Paul Pfeiffer. He discovered the original image, a 1967 photograph by famed basketball photographer Walter Iooss Jr., on the NBA’s online archive. In fact, the “Four Horseman of the Apocalypse” series also started out with five other studio-shot portraits of Monroe. “Everything I think about in terms of film celebrities, is even more apt if we think of it in relation to athletes,” said Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer relates the fleeting relationship between stardom and anonymity to the age of influencers and social media stars in particular.

A store employee habitually ripped lottery tickets after checking them with the lottery terminal. Lottery commissioners deliberated over the case of Paul Marshall, who came forward to collect his prize even though a store employee had torn his winning ticket to shreds. The tearing incident occurred when Marshall returned to the store he bought the winning ticket from to validate it. Fortunately for Marshall, lottery officials were able to "reconstruct what happened," Chuck Taylor, the lottery director of legal affairs and compliance, said, according to the Lottery Post's reporting on the meeting. When it’s warm out, simple sneakers made of light cloth and vulcanized (hardened) rubber take on an air of inevitability. So ubiquitous are Converse Chuck Taylors that the iconic, century-old kicks can appear to be the only canvas option on the menu. Their trademark five-pointed stars (or, in trendier neighborhoods, hearts from Converse’s popular Comme des Garçons Play collab) dominate sidewalks across America.

Is It Time to Give Up on My White Sneakers?

As I enter the job market, I am reconsidering the staple of the white sneaker. If I wear sneakers, will people take me seriously? Or that the filmmaker Chloé Zhao wore Hermès white sneakers with her gown when she won an Oscar back in 2021. Once you start thinking about white sneakers, you start seeing them everywhere. British Esquire called the white sneaker “the blank canvas upon which any modern look can be built.” Harper’s Bazaar crowed, “The best white sneakers can do it all.”The fact is, more than 100 years after Keds introduced its white sneaker, almost 90 years since Chuck Taylor popularized the style with Converse and more than half a century since Stan Smith changed the game — and amid all the color-crazed mayhem of endlessly mutating sneaker culture — white sneakers remain the Platonic ideal of a shoe: eternal, versatile, comfortable.
Why the NBA’s Best Players Keep Sitting
  + stars: | 2023-03-20 | by ( Robert O Connell | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
A generation ago, the NBA’s detractors complained that players “don’t play defense.” Today, as top stars routinely miss games to manage or prevent injuries, critics leave off the last word. With the 2022-23 regular season nearing its conclusion, the league finds itself performing a bothersome annual ritual: fighting off criticism from disappointed ticket buyers at arenas, bored at-home viewers and its own alumni. “We survived playing in Chuck Taylors and flying commercial, for a lot less money,” said Hall of Fame forward and TNT rabble rouser Charles Barkley, at the league’s All-Star showcase in Salt Lake City last month. “To ask guys to play games…Come on, man. You make all that money, you have an obligation to the fans.”
The deadly crush in the nearby nightlife district Itaewon happened after tens of thousands gathered for Halloween celebrations Saturday evening. Most of the victims were women and many of them were missing shoes, which experts say reflects the force of a crowd surge that stripped footwear from their feet in the crush. Some 250 pairs of shoes at the gym are part of a huge collection of abandoned items found in Itaewon following the tragedy. As of Tuesday afternoon, 156 people were confirmed dead and 151 were being treated for injuries, with 29 of them in critical condition. Officials say 26 of the dead were foreign nationals, including five Iranians, four Chinese, four Russians, two Americans and two Japanese citizens.
